The Secret of Kells

I’ve lived through many ages. I’ve seen suffering in the darkness. Yet I have seen beauty thrive in the most fragile of places. I have seen the book. The book that turns darkness into light.

Thus begins The Secret of Kells, one of the most beautiful animated movies I have ever seen. I loved this movie. If you like forests, castles, fairy tales, folklore, wolves, cats,  forests, oak trees, history, anime, medeival culture, Viking lore, pagan lore, medieval music, Irish folklore, Shrek, Labyrinth, and/or The Last Unicorn, watch this. It’s loosely based on an Irish legend about The Book of Kells, and set in the Dark Ages. I love the fact that they present literature as a light in a dark age. That sentiment struck a chord with me, especially now, as we are in an age of  decreasing  literacy rates and watching the decline of the classic ink-and-paper book.

I haven’t fallen in love with a movie like this in years.

Some stills.
